Clipchamp allows you to record videos in your browser with your device’s webcam, without any need to install software. In order to record a video, you need to allow the app access to your webcam and microphone (otherwise your camera won't turn on and you won't be able to record). This is the case for your computer's built-in camera as well as for external cameras.
NOTE: we don't have access to any recordings you make (they stay on your computer unless you choose to back up your project to the cloud).
How to allow access to your webcam
The first time you use the webcam recording feature, you will see a message pop up in the Chrome address bar asking you to allow access "app.clipchamp.com" to use your microphone and camera. Click Allow.
If you accidentally click Block, see below for how to unblock the camera and microphone.
Unblocking access to your webcam
If you try to record and you see an error screen saying "Microphone and webcam access is denied: Please allow access in your browser settings", access to your webcam has been blocked in your browser:
To unblock access:
Click on the lock icon to the left of your address bar.
Select Allow from the dropdown for both the Camera and Microphone.
Then Reload the page. Either use the browser refresh button or click on the Reload pop-up tab.
Once you've allowed access, you should be taken to the recording screen and can start recording your video.
If you'd like to block camera access again at any point, simply click the same lock symbol, change the dropdowns back to Block, and reload the page.
What if my webcam still doesn't turn on?
If you gave Clipchamp permission to access your webcam and mic, and still don't see anything, try changing the webcam in the options menu at the bottom of your recording window, as there might be more than one camera available.
Alternatively, webcam access can also be blocked if you have another app or browser running in the background on your computer that is accessing the camera (e.g. Skype). Try closing down other apps that might be accessing the camera and reloading the page or restarting the browser.
We've also heard from some users that plugins and extensions such as Flashblock can prevent Clipchamp from accessing your webcam. If you have such a plugin installed, disable it and see if the webcam access works afterward.
If none of the above solves the issue, you can contact us by using the chat icon in the bottom right of this page. Note that at certain times of the day or on weekends it may take a while to receive a response due to time zone differences and our office hours.
