Clipchamp includes a free online webcam recorder that you can use in Chrome, Firefox and Edge. Our video recorder also works on Chromebooks.
It allows you to record a video using your computer's webcam and microphone that you can share online and save to your computer. It works similar to recording a video on your smartphone but happens on your laptop/desktop computer instead of your phone or tablet.
Record a video with Clipchamp
1) Go to the front page of clipchamp.com and click this button.
2) Log in to your Clipchamp account.
3) Record your video
Alternatively, if you're logged into your Clipchamp account already and are in the dashboard of your account, you can also use the recording option there instead of on the front page. The video recording button in the dashboard looks like this:
Regardless of which recording button you use, this is what the recording window looks like (some layout elements in the latest version of Clipchamp may appear slightly different).
In the recording window, you can change the resolution, camera and microphone input (if more than one camera and/or microphone are connected to your computer) by clicking the gear icon in the bottom right.
The webcam recording feature works on Chromebooks and any other laptop/desktop such as Windows, Mac or Linux in Chrome, Firefox, Opera and Edge.
Depending on the speed of your computer's CPU, you can record in 720p, 480p or 360p resolution.
If you're recording on a Chromebook, please make sure to close all other tabs in Chrome and also any apps that might be running in the background such as Google Hangouts.
This will make sure that as much of the Chromebook's CPU and memory as possible are available for the webcam recording (which is quite processing-intense so Chromebooks can sometimes struggle with getting the recorded video ready).
We recommend to record in 480p or 360p resolution on Chromebooks and other computers with CPUs that are not as powerful as Macs or PCs.
Access to camera and microphone
Please make sure that Clipchamp has access to your computer's webcam and mic. This is required before you can record a video. Otherwise you will see this message in the recording user interface:
In Chrome, check that you see this icon on the right side of the browser address bar:
The icon looks similar in Firefox, Opera and Edge.
If you're seeing an icon like this
this means that you need to give Clipchamp permission to access your camera and microphone before you can record a video.
To do so, click on the icon and select the "Always allow" option in the window that appears:
Then, hit the Finished button and reload Clipchamp afterwards. This will turn on your camera and microphone so you can start recording videos.
The maximum length of webcam recordings is 5 minutes per video in the free plan of Clipchamp. You can record up to 30 minutes per video in Clipchamp's Professional plan.
