The Clipchamp API is a turnkey solution for website owners to collect videos from their users, have these converted into standard formats such as MP4, and save time uploading those videos in compressed form. How do the capabilities of the Clipchamp API stack up against other video-related services, namely online webcam recorders and video transcoding services?
1. Your videos, your servers: privacy built in
Your users' privacy and their videos' confidentiality is of utmost importance to you. So it is to us. In these days of widespread cyber espionage this is not only a noble intent, but a bespoke design goal for our HTML5 video API. Our patent-pending "Hive Computing" technology allows to capture and process videos in web browsers running on your users' devices and to upload them directly to an environment that you control.
For full details on how the Clipchamp API helps you become compliant with privacy legislation such as COPPA, HIPAA, the international "Safe Harbor" privacy principles and others in industries such as:
- Online Dating or
please refer to our in-depth article on the subject.
2. Receive your videos faster
Size matters. And so does the speed of uploading your users' videos to your servers. The Clipchamp API invokes its patent-pending compression technology to compress user videos on the end users' devices before the video is uploaded. Compress by how much? Take a look at what our users experienced:
Why does that matter? Because with the upload bandwidth being somewhat limited for most users, size equals waiting time. Uploading a 2 GB file or a 11 MB file makes a huge difference. In fact, that's the difference between being almost impractical to collect your visitors' videos and being conveniently fast. Which may well come down to losing a user or keeping her engaged.
3. Say Goodbye to Flash
Ever since Steve Jobs famously banned Flash from the iPhone, it has been dying a slow death. Amazingly slow indeed. Despite its ill-famous tendency to suffer from recurring security defects, from being a "CPU hog" that depletes your device's battery in no time, and from being absent on mobile devices, it is still around. In fact, Flash has been the norm for most online webcam recorders.
Not so for the Clipchamp API. Our technology adheres to a strict "no Flash" principle, where we avoid all of the aforementioned pitfalls. Instead, our API is pure HTML5, making it compatible with virtually any modern web browser - both on mobile devices and desktop computers.
4. Fair and predictable cost
We understand that you need to cover the cost of using a webcam recording and video compression service like the Clipchamp API with your operational income. Clipchamp's affordable prices make planning your expenses easy: our plans always give you the better of two metrics: total minutes of processed video and the number of videos. We automatically apply whichever of the 2 works out more in your favour to determine the cost of our service per billing period.
For instance, our "Standard" plan gives you the better of 1000 videos and 3000 minutes of video per month. If 1000 videos account for less than 3000 minutes, your quota will not be depleted until you also exceed the 3000 minutes cap - no matter what the number of videos is at this point.
Vice versa, if you hit the 3000 minutes first, but have not yet reached 1000 videos, you can continue using your subscription at no extra cost until you reach those 1000 videos - regardless of what the total number of minutes is at this point. That's our fair pricing promise.
5. Integrating the Clipchamp API is simple and fast
This does not only avoid any integration to be performed within your server-side stack, but makes the API compatible with any server-side technology and with any deployment infrastructure (Cloud, on premise, classic website hosting, etc.)
It thus works if your website/web app is based on a popular CMS such as Microsoft Sharepoint, WordPress (check out our plugin), Drupal, or Joomla, it works if you're using Enterprise-grade application servers such as ASP.NET or Java/JEE or an open-source framework such as node.js, Python/django, or PHP. And it also works if you simply serve your website off a plain web server such as Apache or NGINX.
The Clipchamp API is automatically compatible with all of them as there is simply no need for you to perform any integration work on the server. On the client-side, the Clipchamp API supports the current releases of all modern browsers (Chrome, Edge/Internet Explorer, Firefox, Safari, Opera) - both on mobile and desktop operating systems.
6. Clipchamp technology is proven and future-proof
Clipchamp is the most modern web technology for mobile and desktop when it comes to recording, converting, and uploading video. Our patent-pending way of compressing video before uploading it has numerous advantages that benefit our customers - pertaining to privacy, speed, cost and simplicity.
Since we made it available publicly shortly before Christmas 2016, the Clipchamp API has been adopted by organisations in a range of industries including healthcare, education, sports, IT services, recruiting, web design and many others. It does not rely on obsolete technologies like Flash and rapidly adopts emerging HTML5 standards whenever they're useful for our mission:
to provide the best service to enable you to collect user videos on your website or in your web app.
